Please Sponsor A Sunbeam Child

What makes our charity different? We have all made donations to large charities where our money goes into their bank and we have no idea what our dollar was for.....

There are over a hundred lovely children living and thriving in The Sunbeam Children’s Village. Sunbeam has a commitment to feed, clothe, educate and care for these children, and now you too can help by sponsoring a child. We do need your help.

San Po Sun

San Po Sun was very young when his father committed suicide by jumping into the river. His mother was very scared of the mother-in –law and left for Zhao Xing, taking her youngest son with her, and never returned. Po Sun was then left in the care of his grandmother and uncle. Later the uncle left to work outside the village, leaving behind one young and one elderly without any means to support themselves. In September 1999 Po Sun was admitted to The Sunbeam Children’s Village and has lived there since.

Cheung Shi Wan

Shi Wan’s father passed away in May 1994 due to illness. Half a year later his mother left home, leaving behind Shi Wan and his younger sister in the care of their uncle and grandmother. However the grandmother passed away at the end of 1999. In September 1999 Shi Wan and his sister were admitted to The Sunbeam Children’s Village where they still reside.

Mao Li Jin

In 1994 Li Jin’s father lost his eyesight due to an accident at work. His mother subsequently died of an illness in 1995, leaving behind Li Jin and a younger brother. The father was unable to look after the children and has subsequently turned over guardianship to their uncle. As of now the two brothers are living in The Sunbeam Children’s Village. They were admitted in February 2000.

Chow Mei Lei

Mei Li was orphaned at an early age. She has two elder sisters. They lived on what they grew. The elder sister was left to care for her two younger sisters but she has since got married. The second daughter left home to work and has subsequently lost contact with Mei Li. In September 1999 Mei Li was admitted to The Sunbeam Children’s Village where she still lives.

Their backgrounds and stories are all very similar and they all need our help.

Please help us to help them.

You will be a partner in an actual shelter that will give these children the care they deserve. By doing this they can have proper nourishment and health care along with education. Please advise (click here) if you require further information. Join together with us and make the Sunbeam Children's Village a success.

Day-to-day running expenses cost HK$500 (US$64) per month for each child, but for as little as HK $150 (US$19) a month you would help a great deal towards the wellbeing of a child. You will receive a photograph, a short profile and an annual update of your sponsored child’s general progress. You are also welcome to visit the Sunbeam Village.

Please click here to read a beautiful article "Ray of Sunshine for snowy Beiwan" from 1997 by Nuri Vittachi from the archive of The Standard. This is a small excerpt:
Sunday, July 13, 1997

Slowly, the mountains come alive, but not with the sound of music. It is the distant murmur of children's voices. They appear, seemingly out of nowhere, and struggle along the paths that wind between the peaks of the craggy landscape.

The youngsters trudge slowly. There is no spring in their steps. Some have been tramping the rocky path for two or even three hours, although it is early in the morning. As they approach, one notices they are barefoot, the soles of their feet flattened and given square edges by the year-round pounding against the stones of the rough-hewn path that leads them to school.

Although Beiwan is just one day's drive from Hong Kong, the weather is severe as the terrain is mountainous. Winter is marked by frosty nights, and a soft layer of snow falls regularly.

Curiously, some of the children do not have black hair. Their poor diet means they have pigmentation problems, resulting in brown or reddish hair.

The children of the Beiwan mountains are heading for a place which has become very special to them: a school, built by local officials with a lot of outside help, consisting of love, sweat, tears and money from the people of Hong Kong. [Click to read the entire article]
