Funny Sponsorship Equation!

Bloged in Support Sunbeam by joc Friday April 28, 2006 at about 8:15 pm

Thank you to my loony-cousin Clarice Chung for coming up with the below stated equation, maybe all of you can adpot this equation to encourage us in finishing the race!!

__________________________________________

Dear Joc,
Your saddo cousin Clarry has come up with the ultimate equation to determine
how much money to sponsor you.

(x-y)*150/2*$0.33 + y*150*$0.5 = z
z/d = c
c+z = money you get……

ok so x is the weight of your bag to start with (food and equipment)
y is the weight at the end (i assume you have eaten all food and this is the
weight of the equipment)
You carry all this weight for the 150miles…… hence the factor 150. Food
gives you energy but equipment is dead weight so its worth more! This gives
sponsorship subtotal ‘z’ then as an extra incentive to finish quickly we
have equation 2…. where d is the number of days it takes you to finish.
Add it all up and we get the grand total…. DUNDUNDUH! Simple

Ok so working on the assumption that x=30kg and y=5kg… we get z=$1000
if it takes you the full 7 days to finish that gives the bonus of $142

if you think my calculations are wrong then let me know.

Clarry

DSCN0226.JPGDSCN0229.JPG DSCN0227.JPGDSCN0230.JPGShoes are one of the most important parts of our kit, and one month before the race, I still haven’t decided on them.  The strange thing is that you are meant to wear shoes between 0.5 and 2 sizes too big for you, because in the heat and with the altitude, your feet swell.  Nice.  Everyone has such different opinions on shoes - which brands are good, which are bad, so I’ve decided to go with Salomons.  I bought a pair last night - the yellowy ones, and they look pretty cool.  But in the gym this morning, my feet got kind of tired - i think because they are too big.  in fact, i went hiking wearing Uncle Dave’s shoes a few weeks ago (3.5 sizes too big but i wanted to try this too big shoes thing) and my feet really hurt.  I bought the grey Salomons the other day for racing as my trusty old montrails had died, and they are really comfy.  But super-ugly.  I’ve decided that I have no shame with the ugliness of my kit for Gobi - I’m a practical girl.  (Unlike Stephane who wants all matching colours).  More surprises are in store for you when you see my ultra-ugly hat, which really pushes the boundaries of social acceptance.  If I’m on international telly during Gobi, I’m going to lose all street cred (if I ever had any).

We’re going camping this weekend for our training, if anyone wants to come.

Thanks a lot, Veronica Pearson, for donating US$75, and Uncle Dave, (and happy birthday today!) for your HK$5,000 - we’ve jumped to HK$12,300 !!!!

BTW, up to HK$25,000, my kind and generous employers, Messrs Baker & McKenzie, will match the donation, so all donation figures are in effect DOUBLED !!!!!!

Thank you, Chantal Hebert, for your generous donation of US$100 - we’re now at HK$6,700.

Last night Iris and I had dinner and went to look for venues for our post -race photo exhibition / cocktail party.  We found one that is PERFECT !!! but it will remain a mystery until we’ve finalised it.

I feel like I should write a brief description of all the donors as I go along, so that when we have our thank you party, everyone will have a starting point for conversation.  does that make me a strange kind of voyeur?  or social stirrer?

How to size your backpack - Don

Osprey Packs Atmos 35 Backpack - 2100 cu in

Most packs come in different sizes or have suspensions adjustable to your torso length. The most important thing is to match your torso length with the size of the pack.

First measure your torso length by bending your head forward so your chin touches your chest. Feel for the most prominent bump at the back of your neck. Now measure from that point down to an imaginary line connecting the tops of your hips around your back. This works best with a partner’s help.

With the waistbelt firmly centered on the tops of your hips, your pack straps should conform to your shoulder blades with only a slight gap behind your shoulders. Again, have a partner check this for you.

THE MONEY IS FLOWING….The children (that includes myself) will be joyous!!!

Thank you thank you thank you everybody !!!!

Mr. Daniel Plane, for your HK$500, Charmaine Lee for your US$55, Fergus Fung for your US$80, Nick Larner for your US$100.  Gosh, my friends are wonderful !!!!

 Running total: HK$3,500

BTW, anyone who’s reading:  we are planning a photo exhibition / cocktail party to thank our kind, generous, warm, wonderful, goodlooking, sexy, brilliant, funny sponsors (and maybe squeeze more money out of you). We’ve yet to fix the venue but we’re looking at 9 / 10 June.  We don’t like making empty promises so we’ve yet to release details, but hopefully you’ll all get a chance to congratulate us, see us crippled and meet each other after the race.

What a great day!

This afternoon, Mr. Dan Ryan has made an off-line pledge HK$500 outright with an additional HK$500 if we finish (I’m going to count this as HK$1,000 in the running total because THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT WE WILL FINISH),  Mr. Clyde Yee (el rey donde el mundo de salsa y la lei se encuentran) has pledged a very generous HK$1,500 so now we have HKS$6,000.
